Bringing NASA’s DART Mission into the Classroom

Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) is a method of planetary defense against near-Earth asteroids, which changes the direction of a small asteroid by impacting an object sent from the earth as a satellite or space probe.

NASA's recent DART mission has dominated the recent news cycle not only for its scientific achievements but for the awe it inspires. Events like this mission serve as a fantastic tool to engage students in scientific and mathematical theories and how they can be applied in practical and awesome ways in the real world. First, let's dig into what, exactly, the DART mission is.

What is the DART mission?
DART is a spacecraft designed to impact an asteroid to change its direction. DART's target is Dymorphos, a small asteroid 170 meters in diameter, orbiting Didymos, another asteroid 780 meters in diameter. Both asteroids are classified as binary asteroids, as Dymorphos orbits Didymos. Neither threatens Earth as they are more than 1 million km away.
This asteroid system is a testing ground that will help us study whether intentionally crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid is an effective way to change its course. A successful mission would mean that if an asteroid is discovered that threatens the Earth in the future, we will know what to do.
It is important to note that no changes we make to the binary system of Dymorphos and Didymos will pose any risk to us here on Earth.
The DART mission uses an asteroid deflection method known as "Kinetic Impact" since it consists of a ship that crashes directly into the asteroid. However, the asteroid Dymorphos will not abruptly change its trajectory, rather, the impact will just slow it down a little, so that, after a long time, the asteroid's orbit will change slightly.
There are other methods to deflect asteroids, but this is the first one to be put to the test, and the results suggest that it is one of the most effective in defending the planet.

Saving the Earth!
Movies about asteroids heading to earth usually show the classic city-sized asteroid that will destroy the entire planet. Although that makes for an exciting movie, in real life, there are no longer many asteroids of that size in the solar system. Of all the massive asteroids we have discovered, none, fortunately, are headed to Earth.
However, there is a group of much smaller asteroids, such as Dymorphos that have scientists worried. The reason for their concern is that they are more challenging to detect. It is estimated that there are still many out there floating in space.

Although an asteroid the size of Dymorphos cannot destroy the world, it’s still big enough to destroy any city on the planet. Hence, the DART mission is critical to defending us from space threats so that the same thing that happened to the dinosaurs does not happen to us.

Bringing it into the Classroom
What makes the DART mission an engaging concept for the classroom is that it combines two things that interest many students: outer space, and crashing things into each other. For those teachers who already teach Newton’s Laws of Motion, the connection to DART is an easy way to connect it to current events. For teachers who are looking for effective ways to introduce these concepts into the classroom with easy-to-do activities, read on.

Colliding Objects
Preparation note: Students (individually, in pairs, or in small groups) should have access to their own materials.

Materials:

  • Small spheres of various sizes and masses (marbles, ping pong balls, tennis balls, racquet balls, etc.)
  • A flat surface
  • Science journals for the students, a whiteboard for the teacher
Find a resource for presenting the following to your students:
  • An illustration or animation of the DART mission (online news sites or even NASA’s website will have these).
  • Newton’s three laws of motion. (The simplest way is to write them out yourself, but don’t display them right away.)
Introduction of Phenomenon:
  • Ask students to place any sphere in the middle of the flat surface.
  • Have students describe their observations of the sphere.
  • Does it move? Why not? Accept all answers while guiding students to the idea that the sphere will not move until something causes it to move (a force acts on it).
Exploration:
  • Challenge students to make the sphere move without touching it and only using the materials provided. Most students will be able to figure out how to move the sphere by rolling another sphere into it.
  • Ask students about how they got the sphere to move and what observations they made. Include probing questions about what happens when the spheres are not the same size or one sphere is heavier (has more mass) than the other.
  • Next, have the students roll a sphere slowly across the flat surface and challenge them to make it stop or change directions using only another sphere. Once again ask students about what they did and what observations they made. Again dig deeper with questions about what happens when the spheres are not the same size or mass.
  • Throughout this process encourage students to take notes in their journal while you scribe their ideas on the whiteboard.
Discussion and Application:
  • At this point, you can share with the students Newton’s three laws of motion. There are many ways of expressing these laws and you should find one that is most likely to make sense to your students. During the discussion, however, the important point is to help students make connections between these laws and what they observed.
  • First Law: A sphere only moves when a force is applied (when another sphere pushed or collided with them). A moving sphere only stops or changes direction when a force is applied.
  • Second Law: When a bigger (or more massive) sphere hits a smaller sphere, the smaller sphere will move faster. If a smaller sphere hits a larger sphere, the larger sphere’s movement is slower.
  • Third Law: When two spheres collide they bounce off in opposite directions.
Now it’s time to apply these ideas to the DART mission. Share your resource with students that explains what the DART mission was and how it worked. Ask students to make connections between the DART mission and the laws of motion, as they understand them through their exploration.

Closing Thoughts
An exploration of Newton’s Three Laws of Motion may not be appropriate for every classroom at every grade level. Even if the concept is part of your curriculum, your class may not currently be “on that unit”, however, a chance like this to bring real-world science and current events into the classroom is a rare opportunity. You should definitely consider, if possible, taking this unique opportunity to bring science to life for your students.
