It’s no surprise that STEMscopes sought Jennifer Donovan to join the company’s team of curriculum writers. Donovan’s experience in teaching spans several subjects, grades, and districts. She taught all third-grade subjects while at Galveston ISD, in addition to teaching both math and social studies to fourth through sixth grades at Galveston and Dickinson ISD. She was also team leader, mentoring teacher, and department lead. To say she is apt at juggling several topics and subjects at once would be an understatement.
After participating in a summer writing course for project-based learning modules, Donovan brought her passion of creative writing on a variety of subjects while dovetailing her knowledge in building unique lesson plans to the STEMscopes curriculum team in 2015. She eventually moved from the classroom to a full-time, curriculum contract writer at STEMscopes in February of 2018, influencing and assisting both teachers and students in their educational goals while expanding her own knowledge. As STEMscopes Curriculum Manager Alex Owens commented, “Jenn has been sharing her passion for science with STEMscopes for over three years. She is creative, a great collaborator, and never backs down from a writing challenge. Her eye for detail and standard alignment have been essential in many projects across editions, including Virginia and international."
Donovan’s interest in science doesn’t stop with her career. Her husband of 21 years is also a science educator, and she extends nurture to nature by volunteering at a local animal shelter where her family, including two sons—ages nine and 16—work to shelter and foster young and injured animals.
Donovan received her B.A. in English and minored in secondary education and psychology from Old Dominion University, and later earned her master’s in Curriculum
and Instruction from the University of Texas at Arlington. Aside from time spent with her family and creating alignment-based curriculum, she enjoys sewing, singing, and scuba diving, and she’s a self-proclaimed “science nerd.” STEMscopes is overjoyed to have Jennifer Donovan as part of the curriculum writing team.
