No task is too complex or unfamiliar for Bonnie Smith, who joined our team of STEMscopes Science teacher writers at the start of this year. While she’s been with the Texas team for just seven months, Bonnie quickly stood out for her creativity, attention to detail, and willingness to take on new challenges. We are so thankful for teachers like Bonnie, and we’d like to show our appreciation by taking a closer look at her background and accomplishments in this month’s Teacher Writer Spotlight.
With a bachelor’s degree in Biological Science from Lamar University, followed by a master’s degree in teaching with emphasis on PLCs from Grand Canyon University, Bonnie began her career with a strong background in education. After earning her degrees, she used that knowledge to conduct professional development workshops on flipped classroom techniques, then went on to teach Forensics and Biology remediation for the EOC.
Bonnie has also served as Chair for the Campus Improvement Committee, Student Council Co-Sponsor, and as the Youth for Christ Sponsor. Now, Bonnie teaches AP & Pre-AP Chemistry, AP Physics 1, and serves as the Chemistry Team Lead, Science NHS Sponsor, and Science UIL Sponsor at her current school.
With such an impressive resume, we were delighted to have her join our teacher-writer team after meeting a STEMscopes team member at CAST in 2019. Bonnie has been writing for us ever since, enjoying the flexibility of working wherever she’d like and the perspective she’s gained through creating content for a younger audience.
When the school bell rings, Bonnie heads home to her husband of 18 years and their 5-year-old little boy, who loves to explore science with his mom. Her free time is often spent playing guitar and helping out at church.
